That's an interesting article. Hadn't heard of that before. 3dfx might have some protection since their current products act in concert with another company's 2D chip. CRUS patents seem to be for VGA controllers and "bus management technology" although I have no idea which bus they are referring to. Certainly, the Banshee would come under such patents.

Also, there isn't much info in the article concerning the actual cost. Remember S3 has been producing millions of graphics chips for many many years. The cost may be due to the total # of units and maybe they've run up quite a tab.

Pure speculation at this point but I'll see if I can turn up anything more regarding the CRUS patents.
