Why did they call it the officer's mess. Couldn't they keep it clean?

You would think it would be called the private's mess.

I was a field marshall in the secret service. My main duty was thinking up duty for enlisted personnel that would make them think that while they were accomplishing nothing there might be an unknown purpose to the activity that they were not supposed to enquire about. This was supposed to guarantee that anything that did leak out would appear to be totally meaningless to the enemy.

We did lose a robotic fingernail clipper to the other side though inspite of the effective smokescreen.

I had put forward the idea that all secrets would be declassified and distributed widely to personnel as obsolete so that everyone would ignore them. It was vetoed as the commissioned could not bring themselves to not appear to be protective about their files.

The most jealously guarded secret is military hat size. It would allow an enemy if generally known to guess at the intelligence and effectiveness of a unit. This has led to the use of berets that can be fit a wide variety of heads.
