Duane,

I like QWST and CIEN as telecom plays. I also like a canadian company called JDS which is in the component business. They make a very good line of optical switches. I watch others like LU, NT, ALA, NN, T, WCOM but I consider them trading stocks right now. I prefer to stick with companies that I feel have quality management teams in place and solid business potential. There are so many companies out there it's hard to pick otherwise. I don't know of any small company right now that I consider to have a significant breakthrough technology. But many are trying to get in on the action. Even if I did know of one they would have to have a great management team. Nonetheless, I keep watching for Craig to enlighten me.

And wouldn't you then agree, that anything which reduces the noise component is going to comparatively increase the effective transmission distance for any given power level?

Not when there are other limiting sources of noise in the system. In DWDM systems the noise is dominanted by the EDFA noise. The laser noise is already well below the amplifier level. The system noise level can also be dominated at the receiver when few or no EDFA's are used.

The biggest factor that limits transmission distance in fiber systems is pulse distortion due to fiber dispersion. In some cases where the laser is modulated directly additional distortion can take place which adds to the fiber effect.

Cheers!
