8/4/2017 Contest update
A jury found “bad boy of biotech” Martin Shkreli guilty of three counts of securities fraud. Will Shkreli’s conviction be good or bad for biotech stocks? The jury (no, not that Grand One) is still out.
Meanwhile, a strong Friday was not enough to put biotechs in the green for the week. And, at Friday’s close, the Contest median was up 22.84% YTD (vs. up 26.45% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was up 19.25% YTD (vs. up 21.56% YTD a week ago) and the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was up 32.36% YTD (vs. up 35.00% YTD a week ago). The Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) closed up 17.99% YTD (vs. up 18.42% YTD a week ago).
A big boost from DVAX hoisted SMALLB’s portfolio, up 68.09% YTD, into the Contest lead by a smidgen. HRS’s portfolio, up 67.95% YTD, slipped to second place and ROBO’s portfolio, up 59.43% YTD, fell to third place .
At Friday's close, 41 of the 48 Contest portfolios were in the green, with 29 beating the NBI and 13 beating the SPSIBI.
The 195 Contest portfolio stock picks have an average YTD gain of 18.27% and a median YTD gain of just 7.25%, with 110 of the 195 picks up for the year.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: None
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
Enjoy a relaxing midsummer weekend biotechies!
Peace & good health,
Bulba
