Gigabit Ethernet (GE) is primarily an LAN space alternative to ATM.
That's because most companies already use 10MB Ethernet, so upgrading
to 100MB Ethernet (FE) and 1000MB Ethernet (GE) is a natural, low-cost
migration path. Even shops using token-ring can easily put FE/GE in their network cores, instead of HAVING to move to ATM.

In the WAN space, the situation is much different, where speed and Qos
are paramount, and video/voice/data will be commonplace. There F/R and ATM will rule. GE is not even a consideration (I don't think).
