In reading this I'm wondering if the hint is: "we already have the answer"
Maybe I'm over-reading, though in my business where electronic boxes are built and 'delivered' to end customers, the phrase - 'getting closer to being able to deliver' - implies, at least in my business, that the boxes have already built and are going through final phases of qualification and acceptance testing before they get 'shipped' or 'delivered' to end customers.
Since Steve is a lawyer and lawyers typically choose their words typically, maybe, and just maybe, Steve is trying to encourage longs to wait for just a tad bit longer for the good news on blue.
UDC is aware of Cynora's timeline, and so I would think UDC team is working feverishly to beat that timeline with the entire stack meeting customer requirements and emerge as the defacto provider of emissive layer material.
If were Samsung or LG, while I could be experimenting getting TADF into the mix so as to not rely exclusively on UDC, I would be diverting resources towards qualification of new material (TADF) that may or may not succeed to satisfy commercial production. Alternately, I could be focusing my resources in making money using technology piggy-backing on prior proven technology with much higher probability of success. So unless there's a path to profit in doing so - TADF being that much cheaper, and we're talking about blue where I believe quantities wise, it's far less than Red or Green in utilization, what's the real incentive for Samsung/LG other than in using Cynora or KYULUX as pawns in negotiating better terms with UDC?
So from technology standpoint, TADF could be a threat, but from a business standpoint, does it really make sense to switch horses or change tires in the middle of a race? When we went from the horse-buggy to the Model-T, it made a lot of sense in terms of progress, but I'm not sure if that's the same case here in moving from Phosphorescent to TADF unless there's something that I'm really missing - which I concede could very well be the case since neither material science nor chemistry is my primary domain of expertise. |
