Hi aladin — It's not clear whether you're expressing personal outrage or US superiority. Going into the actual history would not interest readers here, so I'll refrain.

From Canada's west coast to the east, there are hundreds of unserved and underserved areas. The private sector has maximized revenue extraction at the expense of coverage, while the national regulator has been consistently pwned by operators. After decades, there are still thousands of miles on important highways where you can't get a mobile signal. And far too many towns begging for a strand of fibre -- never mind redundancy.

In this particular case, or in general I won't defend idiotic decisions made by operators, the private sector, regulators or government. In Canada, the US, the UK, Australia -- but notably, not everywhere -- we see such lunacy replicated again and again. It usually boils down to some variant of private sector profit vs public benefit.

Maybe next time you come to Canada, you'll bring a satphone. Then you'll be fine ;)

Jim
