Unlike an exchange,an investor's buy or sell order is not matched against another investor's sell or buy order. Trading is directly with the Market Maker firm. The Market Maker does not act as the agent and principal,but rather as sole principal."

Principle Trade.
In a "principle trade" the broker/dealer is acting as a principle or dealer. In this transaction,securities are sold to the customer out of his inventory,or are bought from the customer for his inventory.Depending on whether the dealer is buying or selling,he receives either a MARKUP or MARKDOWN on these type of transactions

Dual Trade
In the case of a "Dual Agency Trade" the broker/dealer acts as agent for both the seller and buyer of a security. he receives a commision on both sides of the trade. The dual agency status must be disclosed on the customer confirmation of these transactions"
