January 8, 1998 ZDNet News via Individual Inc. : Digital Equipment Corp. will work with Sequent Computer Systems Inc. to port Digital Unix to Intel Corp.'s IA-64 architecture, the companies announced today.
The 64-bit Unix initiative will be owned by Digital. The joint development effort will combine Digital's Unix with technology from Sequent's Dynix/ptx IA- 32 Unix operating system, including Non-Uniform Memory Access.
"Together with Sequent and future partners, we intend to lead the market for 64- bit Unix by delivering the best enterprise Unix on Intel, the best path to Merced for customers and ISVs, and proven Unix-Microsoft interoperability, " Digital CEO Robert Palmer said in a release.
The companies said the initiative will have a single implementation across Intel IA-64 and Digital's own Alpha technology.
Palmer said today's announcement "reinforces Digital's long-term strategic commitment to Unix on both Alpha and Intel."
In October, Intel and Digital settled a pending patent litigation when Intel purchased Digital's Alpha manufacturing facility in Hudson, Mass., for $700 million. Intel will build Alpha chips for Digital under a five-year commitment. ______________________________________________________________________
