8/11/2017 Contest update
For those looking for fire & fury, there was plenty in the biotech world this week. Let’s hope that’s not a foreboding of fire & fury elsewhere on the planet.
Although the biotech indexes had a rough week, portfolio favorite FGEN’s jump managed to put the Contest median slightly in the green. And at Friday’s close, the Contest median was up 23.58% YTD (vs. up 22.84% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was up 15.82% YTD (vs. up 19.25% YTD a week ago) and the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was up 28.19% YTD (vs. up 32.36% YTD a week ago). The Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) closed up 16.23% YTD (vs. up 17.99% YTD a week ago).
SMALLB’s portfolio, up 71.24% YTD, remained the Contest leader, with ROBO’s portfolio, up 63.62% YTD, moving up to second place and HRS’s portfolio, up 60.55% YTD, dropping to third place.
At Friday's close, 40 of the 48 Contest portfolios were in the green, with 31 beating the NBI and 16 beating the SPSIBI.
The 195 Contest portfolio stock picks have an average YTD gain of 13.49% and a median YTD gain of a mere 1.10%, with 100 of the 195 picks up for the year. Apparently, a small number of very big winners have boosted the average stock gain relative to the median.
