53% Downside Volume on the NYSE - 64% Upside Volume on the NASDAQ

online.wsj.com

Big rise in the number of New Lows on the NYSE and NASDAQ. Nearly 10 times as many new lows on the NYSE as New Highs. About 5 to 1 on the NASDAQ. Are these short term bottom numbers or do we have further downside ahead? One of the reasons that I started posting this data is that bear market sell offs often have numerous 80% downside days before they end. Obviously we are not in a bear market. But good bottoms form on a higher volume up day than the last previous down day with either 90% up volume on that day or... two 80% upside days in close succession. We certainly have not seen even one of those days yet. Where does the market go from here? This data from the WSJ and charts will hopefully have some predictive value. If the market manages a rally now it should fail due to the poor market breadth and lack of volume. If it works lower until we get overly bearish sentiment then with good bottom formation numbers then new highs for the market are certainly not out of question before we ever hit a bear market.. Some new charts below. RtS

*Primary market NYSE, NYSE American or NYSE Arca only. †Compares the ratio of advancing to declining issues with the ratio of volume of shares rising and falling. Arms Index or TRIN = (advancing issues / declining issues) / (composite volume of advancing issues / composite volume of declining issues.) Generally, an Arms of less than 1.00 indicates buying demand; above 1.00 indicates selling pressure.
