Brumar, if you think about it, Trump's rise is all due to identity politics.
The racists, the white nationalists, the ones who celebrate Confederate war heroes, they all practice the original form of identity politics. That should be obvious. If you're white, you believe in helping white people, you vote for white people, and you do everything you can to preserve white identity. All other races should just fend for themselves.
But on the other side, we have Antifa and the politically correct gestapo. And they practice the new form of identity politics. It goes something like this: "I'm ABC, so I'm offended that you said XYZ." Just like the white nationalists, the so-called "alt-left" believes that your race and your creed should dictate your politics.
If you're black, Latino, or Asian, you have to vote Democrat or else you're an "Uncle Tom."
If you're white, you have to continually apologizing for being white, or else you are a racist and you should have no say in politics.
If you're a man, you have to shut up about gender or else get fired and ostracized, even if you bring up facts, statistics, and scientific studies.
And you only get to talk about free exercise of religion if you are a Muslim or a Jew. If you are a Christian, you need to shut up about your beliefs.
Think about it. These are two sides of the same coin. They feed off each other. They grow and they energize their base of support by saying, "The other side is worse." And both sides are what got Trump elected.
So when Erick Erickson says that the nation cannot tolerate 3.5 more years of this, he's right in one sense, but he's wrong to pin this on Trump.
Because Trump is not the cause. Trump is the result. And I can prove it.
