Be prepared by increasing self sufficiency. More important than gold...store some (how much is your call) extra food (preferably dry bulk or canned), bottled water, and other household essentials. In the event case the economy's transportation, communication and delivery system is interrupted via civil disorder, EMP, a terror attack, or natural disaster? The well known <just in time> inventory maintained by most businesses won't last long. This isn't hysteria or fear mongering. In fact, it's exactly the opposite. Prudent action which ensures greater peace of mind.

Cost of the above is minimal and you simply replenish the stored items as you consume them, so nothing is wasted. An addition step would be to purchase, even a small, back up generator for lighting and essential home appliances. "Preppers" take the planning process much further. I'm only mentioning a few essentials that almost everyone can manage to bank.
