I have not transitted the port of San Diego but I am sure its nowhere near as big and complex as Singapore and over there the US flagged military ship is just another hunk of metal floating by in the endless stream of other metal ships coming and going. Turning or stopping a large vessel is difficult. Their momentum is immense.

I had the unfortunate experience of getting honked at as I was clearing the last of a series of cruise ships in the port of Nassau late one night. I was tired and it was after midnight and I had been cleared by the port authority to proceed and was moving at deliberate yet cautionary speed when I suddenly noticed that this megalith of a ship was inching forward towards our vessel. As it honked, I sped up and got the hell out of the way. It was towering over us and darn close. Woke up my crew, which was good cause we were going to be docking soon.
