NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – As reported by the Advocate: "Former Ku Klux Klansman and ex-state Rep. David Duke admitted Wednesday that he lied about his 1998 income and bilked his supporters from 1993 to 1999 by gambling away a large amount of the money they sent him."Duke, who has been out of the country for nearly three years but returned to Louisiana last week after visiting his seriously ill father in New Jersey, pleaded guilty in federal court to making a false statement on a federal income tax return and to mail fraud in exchange for a 15-month prison term and a $10,000 fine.

"U.S. District Judge Eldon Fallon is scheduled to sentence the 52-year-old Duke on March 19. Duke, who voluntarily returned to the United States as part of his plea agreement with prosecutors, is free on a $10,000 bond.

"…Duke's controversial past and white-supremacist views had nothing to do with the federal government's case against him, [U.S. Attorney Jim] Letten stressed.

"…What Duke pleaded guilty to doing was understating his 1998 gross income by more than $46,000 (he reported total income of less than $19,000), and overstating his need for contributions and then using large portions of that money for personal investments and gambling in Mississippi, Las Vegas and the Bahamas, the prosecutor said during a news conference.

"…Duke allegedly siphoned off more than $200,000 in contributions to his white-supremacist organizations to support lavish casino gambling binges, according to a search warrant affidavit justifying the raid…"
