Doesn't Costco have some policy about returns on electronics? Such as, they don't take electronics back?
There is a 90 day return period on computers. There are probably some restrictions on it, but it seems pretty clean. I'd probably do it if I could replace it for the same money. on sale when I bought it.

getting a stateside guy to take control of my computer
No one, including me, could take control of this computer because it simply wouldn't boot The only accessible screens were Boot Configuration and Bios. I'm not sure what the theoretical combinations are, but we tried a lot of them. A box will reportedly arrive tomorrow for its trip to Houston.
