He IS a NY liberal. But he has a low opinion of his base. He figures his base includes a lot of people who like the Klan, so he hedges on his condemnation of Klan and Nazi groups who rallied in Charlottesville. He pretends like he admires the Confederacy and he loves those beautiful monuments. It's BS but it's BS with a purpose of assuring his base he's one of them. Just like he figured opposition to illegal immigration was all about not liking Mexicans, so he bashed Mexico and Mexicans frequently during his campaign ... including Mexican Americans like the governor of NM, like one of the judges overseeing a Trump U fraud case (the NY judge he never said word one about).
