Can anyone comment on the best way to do this? I don't have enough money for some CBOE contract and not sure where I'd put a thousand ounces or whatever amount they sell.

There are a couple of different silver futures. One is for 5,000 oz and the other is for 1,000 oz.

The lowest premuim way to buy "small" amounts of physical silver is the $1,000 face-value junk bag. This has $1,000 in circulated US silver coins and is one of two weights (both around 730 oz, I think) depending on whether you buy all or no $1 coins. Call around to various coin and bullion dealers and you should have no problem finding them.

BTW, 10 100-oz silver bars would take up about the same amount of space or less as the Phoenix, AZ yellow and white pages stacked together so you could get by with a moderately-sized safe deposit box or a small safe.
