North Pacific winter storms strengthen from baroclinic energy conversions, which is a product of the magnitude of meridional winds and meridional temperature gradients. In other words, the strength of North Pacific storms is related to the magnitude of the North Pacific jet stream. A strong jet is typical for a cold Arctic and warm tropics. Considering the Arctic was warmer 1000 years ago when Vikings were farming on Greenland and Alaska was a dense forest, this would make sense.

Thanks!
