8/25/2017 Contest update
Maybe I’m being overly gloomy, but my superstitious sensors are signaling that Hurricane Harvey portends stormy weather for stocks.
Meanwhile, biotechs had a nice run this week more than wiping out last week’s losses. At Friday’s close, the Contest median was up 24.36% YTD (vs. up 20.56% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was up 17.39% YTD (vs. up 14.74% YTD a week ago) and the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was up 31.47% YTD (vs. up 26.84% YTD a week ago). The Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) closed up 16.39% YTD (vs. up 15.48% YTD a week ago).
SMALLB’s portfolio, up 71.89% YTD, remains the Contest leader, while HRS’s portfolio, up 70.12% YTD, is close behind in second place and ROBO’s portfolio, up 62.71% YTD, holds on to third place.
At Friday's close, 41 of the 48 Contest portfolios were in the green, with 29 still beating the NBI and 16 beating the SPSIBI.
The 195 Contest portfolio stock picks have an average YTD gain of 16.74% and a median YTD gain of 6.17%, with 106 of the 195 picks remaining up for the year.
