Hitachi, Intel To Develop Technology To Combine TVs, PCs

Dow Jones Newswires -- January 8, 1998

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Hitachi Ltd. (6501 J.HAI) and Intel Corp. (INTC) will jointly develop a personal computer system that uses Hitachi's 'auto format decoding' (AFD) technology that accepts all current protocols for viewing TV programming on a computer screen. They hope to develop an industry standard for use by ground-based digital television broadcasters, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reports in its Friday morning edition.

Hitachi is looking to develop a synergy with the U.S. semiconductor giant by sharing their expertise on unification of consumer electronics and computers.

The AFD technology of Hitachi was developed at its U.S. R&D lab. Experts of the two companies are studying the possibility of adopting AFD for personal computers that use Intel's microprocessors.

If the two companies reach agreement on the commercialization of the computers with AFD capabilities, Hitachi will allow Intel to use its know-how.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission decided to let the market decide which protocol for ground-based digital broadcasting will prevail. This has resulted in 18 protocols currently competing for the industry standard.

Hitachi's technology is able to receive any ground wave from digital broadcasting and automatically convert it to waves that provide a display on a computer monitor.
