9/1/2017 Contest update
Go fly a KITE! Ok, I couldn’t resist. Neither could Gilead. And the KITE of its desire came with a very long tail, carrying much of the biotech sector along for the flight. Investors may be putting the CAR-T before the horse (once again, couldn’t resist), but at least for this week biotechs were soaring sky high.
At Friday’s close, the Contest median closed up a phenomenal 32.85% YTD (vs. up 24.36% YTD a week ago). This is quite a bit better than the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI), up 26.81% YTD (vs. up 17.39% YTD a week ago), but no match for the sizzling smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI), up 43.07% YTD (vs. up 31.47% YTD a week ago). The Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) closed up 19.55% YTD (vs. up 16.39% YTD a week ago).
HRS’s portfolio, up a spectacular 87.36% YTD, is now back in the Contest lead, but second place SMALLB’s portfolio, up 86.36% YTD, is a mere tad behind. ROBO’s portfolio, up 80.25% YTD, held on to third place.
At Friday's close, 42 of the 48 Contest portfolios were in the green, with 30 beating the NBI and 18 beating the SPSIBI.
(My own portfolio’s decent 27.46% YTD gain is only good enough for number 30 in the Contest.)
The 195 Contest portfolio stock picks have an average YTD gain of 24.63% and a median YTD gain of 12.06%, with 115 of the 195 picks up for the year.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: None
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
Especially to all those recovering from Hurricane Harvey, best wishes for a safe & dry Labor-day weekend!
Peace & good health,
Bulba
