Bond advice - Hope everyone is enjoying their long weekend, I have been a longtime member of SI but have mainly been lurking in recent years due to work, etc. I have found this and one other SI board quite valuable as I have been slowly positioning my portfolio for retirement - so thank you all for your contributions. I hope to become more active here on SI once I retire. My plan is to retire early, in the next 8-10 months when I will turn 57 and my wife will turn 60.

I also posted this on the income investing board which is the other board I mainly follow.

I have always been an equity guy so my knowledge and investment in bonds has been quite limited. I have been doing a lot of reading as of late as I would like to add some bond component to my portfolio as I think it makes sense to have some allocation, plus the stock market seems quite frothy. I would really be interested in hearing from different members their thoughts on the bond aspect of their portfolio.

My main goals are capital preservation, a reasonable mix of equity and bonds given our ages and generating income to draw in retirement. My goal is to generate annual income from the portfolio (bonds and sticks mixed) of about 4% with perhaps a slightly higher total return. Right now because bonds have not been my area of expertise, I have been looking more at fund options rather than individual issues

Muni funds
Closed end bond funds
Bond mutual funds
Short or long term duration
etc

Not really sure the best direction on the carious categories, percent of the portfolio to have in bonds, etc., etc. So if anyone can share their thoughts on how you manage your bond portfolio with your preferred stock and other income investments, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks
