Why should I care if my trade moves the market?

If your a large trader then it moves against you while your executing your trade. If your trying to buy a lot you have to pay more because of your own demand. If your trying to sell a lot you get a lower price because of your own supply. That would be a problem for not so big traders as well except they don't move any but the most illiquid of markets (which HFT is probably not relevant to)

Liquidity is a farce.

Liquidity is an important issue. Its just usually maintained fairly well, partially because we don't have a financial transaction tax.

In any case such a tax mostly just drive trading to other jurisdictions.
