TopCat, the thing is that many if not most of my friends are liberals, including a former pastor of mine.

It's understandable when you're liberal in your youth. I certainly was. I believed in altruism via collectivism. Sounded like something worthy to believe in at the time.

But if you become more liberal as you get older, something happened.

There was a friend of mine from high school who I looked up to. He was very smart, incredibly hard-working, and conservative. He was also mature and self-grounded for a high school guy, and he ended up going to one of the top Ivy Leagues.

Turns out that over the years, he became a liberal for some reason or other. OK, I'm fine with that. But there was one time he posted something on his FB feed which smacked of Trump Derangement Syndrome. I commented on that post with a call to reason, only to get a "F--k off" response from him.

Wow, that was unexpected, I thought. Given our history and our old friendship, I refrained from engaging in a flame war with him. Turned out that was a smart move, since later on he PM'd me and apologized for his tone.

But man, how people change. And seeing him become a bitter liberal was quite eye-opening to me.
