Yep, IMO the only 'economic benefit' it has is in the money spent by people like Katsuyama to develop alternate exchanges to get away from these people. Other thing is, there are buildings full of very bright quants here in Chicago with advanced degrees that spend their days writing 'better' algorithms for these trading firms. One would think there are more useful ways these people could use their talents, but I guess money talks....
