Well, there are gravitational forces at play with the Moon..

But this theory is more about conversion of physical EQ energy into electrical impulses (remember energy cannot be created, or destroyed, only stored, transferred, or converted into another form)..

So that IEEE article was rather controversial, given that it theorizes that physical EQ energy, to a certain extent is stored in the physical rock, like a capacitor/semi-conductor, and released as electrical charges..

When one looks at the amazing amount of physical energy that is unleashed by an M8+ EQ, we're talking about astronomical amounts of energy to be transferred (and stored elsewhere to another part of the plate), or converted into some other form..

That M8.1 in Mexico released 1,400,000,000 tons of TNT equivalent energy according to the Kelly Kiloton Index.. (1,400,000 Kilotons).. And every logarithic decimal point higher nearly doubles that energy.

Simply incredible..

Now.. the theory about solar flares is that they excite/disrupt the magnetosphere, and transfers electrical energy into the earth, of which some of it converts (due to the semi-conductive properties of certain rock) into stored physical energy, much like a capacitor..
