[Highspeed Internet for Europe]

<<<NEC, Cisco and Alcatel are collaborating on a European Union-funded project to design a high-speed Internet for Europe ready in time for the new millenium. >>>

<Surely there's some DMT in here. But two years of trials! Were we THAT far-sighted?? >

Well, my popcorn's cold, how about yours????

I do remember discussing the difficulty of installing telco equipment, backbones, and so on, and the thought was that, yes, it would take till late '97, perhaps early '98, before deployment would really heat up. We didn't calculate the chips taking as long as they have or the almost perverse tedium of telco pacing. Yes, many warned that telcos are slow. Yet GTE gave us many indications they'd be deploying much sooner and, who knows, maybe they would have if the chips were out.

Stories to tell our grandkids. . .

Cheers!

Pat
