No Bill, you may be able to buy a bitcoin ETF, but to have actual bitcoin, which is really alpha-numeric formula, a transaction must, by process, be recorded on the "Blockchain"
I have bought bitcoin from exchanges, such as Bitstamp, & Kraken, and have even bought it privately for cash from individuals in coffee shops, with laptops.
Every single transaction in Bitcoin is recorded on the blockchain. The way that both parties know it is a legit transaction, is the blockchain will generate confirmations, mathematically. Thats what differentiates real BTC from a line of nonsense letters and numbers.
Whether it is a gift, bitcoin for cash, bitcoin for merchandise, the transaction will emerge on the blockchain. You hold the bitcoin(formulaic code) in a wallet, where you can add, or send to another wallet, some or all.
