The Great Recession wasn't caused by government per se, but by bad bankers who wrote bad loans. The government is supposed to regulate banks and the regulators didn't understand what they were doing (derivatives etc.) so they gave banks a pass. It's also worth noting that these bankers lied to investors about the health of their banks and the system. I think they thought they could get away with lying after Bush got away with lying about WMDs. If I'm correct CEOs will lie to investors again because Trump made lying acceptable again.
