Thomas, I have not seen any sign off wholesale layoffs here in Malaysia. But news here is very censored and non critical. I don,t know. I have heard of plant furloughs of up to two weeks. Proton (the national automobile co.) has decided to have a two week shutdown during the upcoming Hari Raya/Chinese New Year holiday. Employees may elect to take accrued vacation time or unpaid leave.
Employment rate here has been quite high. Virtually 100%. So much so that there has been controversy over the import of foreign labor. Their are many Indonesians, Bangladeshis, Burmese, Filipino, and other nationalities employeed here. There must be some expectations of layoffs or , some have occurred recently, as the paper carried a warning to employers that they face stiff penalties if they do not see to the repatriation of foreign workers, who, by law, lose there visa if they lose their job.
