My son is glued to the Redzone Channel because of all his fantasy teams. His generation was raised on Sportscenter that glamorized players and plays over the teams themselves. I therefore think there is still broad support for the sport, but the passion that makes people stop their lives and live and die by their favorite team for a few hours each Sunday is waning. While out running today I was watching on my NFL Mobile app. I wonder if those numbers are factored into the ratings, not to mention people who watch on the web via third-party streaming sites.

I should also add that even though the number of kids playing football must be down >50% over just a decade ago, the high school and college games are still well attended. The level of play, though, has for sure suffered. Our kids won their first two games by a combined 101-3. Though the same teams still dominate year after year, it seems the ones who were at least competitive no longer attract their best athletes. Either that or perhaps it's their coaching due to the nationwide trend to slash sports budgets in HS to save money. We pay most of our coaches through our Gridiron Club which is all donations, for sure a luxury other towns can't afford.

In sum, the landscape for youth sports is changing in more ways than one-- big time. I'm not sure we've figured out how to measure it yet.
