My boys consider it rude to use the voice function of their smart phones, and I think their attitude is typical in that generation.

The context of telephoning has changed drastically in our lifetime. Until just a few years ago there were only land lines. You didn't call a person, you called a house.

Today most people carry their phones on their person every hour of the day. If you call someone you may be interrupting a personal bodily function.

From this new point of view you are telling the person you are calling that talking to me is more important than anything else you may be doing right now.

I at least halfway agree with that. It helps that I've never liked talking on a phone.
