When I worked as a Red Cross volunteer in blood services - in the 1990's - they went to GREAT care to prevent anyone who had had "sex" with a homosexual from giving blood.

Donors were required to sign a document that was so confidential even the person doing the interview could not read the answer. This was done as the last step before the donation so as to give the person a last chance to "tell the truth" and back out - if they had lied previously - and IF they had a conscience attack.

Fast forward in California 20 years later: Now homosexuals can give blood.

I do now know how or if they screen the blood, since I am no longer involved. However, I would recommend that anyone who needs a transfusion try to get a donor they know personally - like a family member.
