They used "decimated" about the homes destroyed in the Keys. The word means to take out or lose one out of ten. The prefix "deci" is an obvious clue. But modern common use has it meaning "almost fully," or if you will, 90% as the part taken out. I don't think I'll ever get used to it.

I think it is used like it is today because "decimate" sounds so dramatic so it's like, who cares what it means.
