For long term holdings (investing) I would want inflation +10%. Six years ago I set my goals at 14%/year (infl+11). Found out that was too easy (the markets were generous) and I did not have the patience to wait more than few weeks. Long story short: I evolved into daytrader with goal of 0.5%/week (buy four stocks at $50, sell two at 49 3/4, one at 50 and one at 50 3/4). Last summer I was getting 1.5% per week, then I started losing 2%/week and I went to all cash to lick my wounds.

I am a fair weather trader (not an investor). When the winds are with me I set sail again : )
