Here's what happened in the real world. A US ambassador left a secure building and stayed at a building that didn't have a safe room. The building was attacked and set on fire. He died within minutes from smoke inhalation. By the time the CIA got to the building (from down the street) the ambassador was already dead. Three other people were killed as they tried to defend the first building, retreated and had another firefight at the building housing the CIA. For whatever reason the US military did not have the location of the CIA building so was unable to help until after the ensuing battle as over.
