Statistics System Upgraded to Reflect Growth Economy
[Lateline 1/8/98] In midth of rapid economic change, China will speed the reform of its statistics system to accurately reflect a diversifying economy, China Daily reported, quoting Liu Hong, director-general of the State Statistics Bureau.
China's indices needed to be more precise, complete and in line with international standards as it pushed for a more open market economy, Liu said.
Improved technology and strict data-quality control ensured that China's macroeconomic indices were "basically'' accurate, but some of the measures needed in its transition from a planned to a market economy were lacking, Liu said.
"As the country's economy becomes increasingly sophisticated, statisticians are faced with more difficulties,'' Liu added.
Diversified corporate ownership and the co-existence of old and new economic management methods were among the headaches.
Sound statistics and analytical reports were increasingly important to help policy makers monitor economic and social developments and exercise policy controls, Liu said.
China will model its system on the 1993 version of the System of National Accounts, a global standard formulated by the United Nations. |
