IRQ sharing will solve most of the problem.

Good thinking but maybe you never check the spec of USB. It is not designed to support storage device. It only have 1.5MB/sec bandwidth shared by all devices in the chain except the keyboard and mouse! (slower than IEEE1284 or ECC/EPP) Digital camera, modems, joystick are good citizen of USB but none of devices I listed can be nicely support by USB.

Oh BTW, USB itself is a great idea, it is simple, user-friendly...
