Everything counts .... McDonalds, Chipotle, French (pee) wine and Chinese caviar.

I don't do any one of the above .... and so I can be somewhat objective. Regarding wine, my favorite wine is organic, from Tuscany --- though I drink little. It's chemical free and comes from a two-hundred year old horse farm ....... though it may very well contain horse pooh ...... as does most politics and most logic these days. :)

Yes, there is corruption everywhere, from ground beef to caviar farms. In my experience, the kind of corruption one sees in the Western world (and the U.S) occurs at a far higher level than in the East (China, for example). When the threshold for corruption is higher, you tend to see less of it. Now this does not mean the long-term cost is smaller. There is no way to assess cost without understanding all the parameters --- and nobody gets to see all the parameters. We experience the costs ever so slowly. The amortization of pain, perhaps.

I still believe the best caviar comes from Russia. The Chinese version makes inroads because it is cheaper. But the people who feast on caviar are people who typically do not care about cost, and so middle-men are prone to talk up and mark up a product of their own benefit. My rough guess is that a robust half of the world's problems are caused by middle men poking the world with a stick in both directions.

In this world, enterprises and lives survive on image. Reality is not what it seems.
