I couldn't agree with you more about gender. I guess it sounds better to some than sex, because that may be confused with "you know what." But gender should be a grammatical concept and not necessarily related to maleness or femaleness.
My son, home from college, had a good putdown for those who use "gender" for "sex". When he heard someone on TV say that a woman had been discriminated against because of her gender, he replied. "Maybe she was also discriminated against because of her declension."
But, that said, we are whistling into the wind (to Bowdlerlize a common expression.) "Gender" is PC, nowadays, like "chairperson" or, worse, "chair", so let's get used to it.
