I found the ridiculous memory hog culprit on Chrome - my Xfinity (Comcast) mail inbox page. I keep it open all day to trim out incoming junk before downloading it to my iphone (which does not have a lot of storage).

Chrome task manager shows it's the one tab that gets into the GB memory usage. I have to end the process on that tab periodically then restart it throughout the day to get memory usage down to a reasonable number.
