Glenn, I am not a Network expert - just a lowly programmer. But I'll try to expose my ignorance by posting what I think I know :

Let say a router is the Main Post Office of your city. ALL mails and parcels from around the metro-city funnel thro' this Main Post Office and sort-and-forward to other cities or other countries. Another router - another Main Post Office - receives these mail and sort them again and forward them to the receivers.

Now these Main Post Office workers are pretty old, getting fat pays and slow in motion. Mail and parcels are stack up to the ceiling in the Main Post Office and not getting anywhere.

There comes these Super-efficient Couriers on bicycles, they intercept these mail before they reach the Main Post Office and look at the addresses and swiftly forward them to the destinaton thro' whateve means - and they are the Layer-3 switches ! That's what Dave House meant by 'dropping these switches in front of Cisco's router'.

Layer-3 switches are much faster than Routers because they are mostly hardware (ASIC) driven whereas routers are software driven. Hardware are much faster and that's what they meant by 'Wire-speed' for these layer-3 switches.

Don't give me sh--, that's as close as I understand these stuffs<G>.
