I goofed and depended on my memory. Medical costs as a percent of GDP were 3.94% in 1960 and are about 19% in 2017. You definitely got the rest of it spot on though.

Many older Americans are counting on medical breakthroughs, including in the DNA area, (and the "endless cornucopia" of the nanny state) to rescue them from a lifetime of bad health (and money & debt) habits and extend their lives.
