In the US with Verizon we'd been paying $31 a month for 700 minutes of talk, free long distance and unlimited text - but no data / internet access.

Adding data suddenly adds an extra $55 a month plus $30 a month if you want to activate the WiFi HotSpot on your phone for a total bill with bogus fees and 'alleged taxes' of something like $135 or more each month.

In the US I can wait until I'm someplace with free WiFi access to use data rather than pay an extra $100.

T-Mobile has brought that $135 a month price down to $30 all-in for 55 age+ set (I think $55 for those under age 55). We're also suddenly paying an additional $12 a phone for theft / breakage insurance because we now have relatively costly phones.

So in total we increased our bill by $11 to go from no data to essentially unlimited data (50 GB per month for $42 with insurance vs $31 without insurance for the cheaper phones). So we'll see if my urge to use the internet when I'm not near free WiFi increases. I'm sure how ever much data I use I'll get $11 a month worth of value from it.

We've long had GSM smart-phones for travel where you buy a sim locally, but these pre-paid prices are more costly than the 29.95€ + 10€ a month for EU Unlimited.

Orange sells a sim for 2 week 10 GB, 120 min, 1,000 texts for 40€ - while a comparable 4 week 5 GB is 20€ from most providers. So the cost is in the data. - boutique.orange.fr

It seems Deutsche Telekom has changed their mind about selling T-Mobile, so maybe they'll buy Rogers, Telus or Bell and slash prices in Canada as well.

Perhaps T-Mobile saw the same interview I watched with a 105 year old woman. They asked what she liked to do, and she replied, "Older people mostly like to sit or sleep."
