<...TCGI is in 60 mkts, but remember, they are a fiber based CLEC, and much of their last mile to the buildings they service is resell, not facilities based...guess who has the cost effective solution to that costly dilemma??...and I am told T knows this.... >
Of course! You don't think AT&T is going to play ostrich, crying about the cost of local access while watching the baby bells, Worldcom and GTE pushing into data and toll traffic, Qwest and PSIX pushing to voice over IP, Directv and cable companies moving to cheap highspeed internet, do you? AT&T is just refining their approach to local and I wouldn't be surprised to see them pursue voice over IP with surprising speed and vigor. The cost of them buying their way into this probably less of a concern to them than the money they spent trying to build central offices around the country. What a waste of time and money that turned out to be. I just don't think they're going to try to reinvent wheels in '98 when purchasing existing bandwidth is, for them, rather easy.
Whether PSInet is a part of this strategy is arguable, but I do think they just might be in the right place at the right time, after all.
