Here's an interesting take, he is turning on a feature of Apple 4K TV that essentially up-scales non-DV content to DV..........

avsforum.com

Hey guys: I finally placed a Apple TV 4K on the W7 (this applies to the G7 and E7) and I can't recommend enough for owners that would be interested in this: Apple TV 4K forces an "always on" Dolby Vision.

I've been using a previous generation Apple TV for viewing TV with my Direct TV Now subscription. I have a FIOS line connected to the W7 as well, but I prefer the streaming PQ for TV on the ATV codecs rather than FIOS.

Well, here is one of those unintended wow moments.. I'm watching Direct TV Now using the new ATV 4K set to the always on Dolby Vision and I can't express how next level in PQ this looks. Yes, its not native DV but the ATV 4K is forcing the TV to work at its highest processing mode.. the DV image processing algorithm in the LG OLEDs operates differently than the algorithm for non-DV content. From a cursory review of some commercials on CNN that display a large white background where ABL would noticeably kick in, I have yet to notice this yet on the DV enabled ATV.

ATV 4K with this always on Dolby Vision is excellent.

I've expressed with my Sony OLED admiration of the always-on dynamic HDR processing, which is something you can't turn off... well with this ATV 4K with Dolby Vision always on, this is the Dolby Vision counterpart that adds the dynamic processing when Dynamic Contrast is set to LOW. This is doing what the Sony does, but with the official Dolby Vision calculations... Looks like a totally different TV.

(Karate Kid on AMC, Direct TV Now app, iPhone camera, image fidelity and black levels are much better in person)

Note: Couple the ATV 4K with Dolby Vision always on 60Hz, up Brightness to 58 for black level details, with TruMotion User - De-Judder 2 - De-Blur 2 is flawless.
