I'm thinking no battery
would have lasted 25 years so maybe it's just a date thing especially
since both boxes seem to have been afflicted at the same time, one
plugged in and one not plugged in.

Didn't we have the CMOS run off a battery in those old machines before booting? I had to replace on in an old Dell once. The date thing sounds right since both did the same thing, unless both have batteries from the same batch.
