I think what you say is very true.

Normally, it is not good to generalize. But please allow me to briefly, as it is the only way I can try to put my thoughts into
print.
I believe, as a nation the Chinese have far more "cultural pride"
than most Western countries. Perhaps it is because China has been a country longer. As far as America goes, it is not uncommon for me
to be asked: "What nationality is DeShong?", since the only native
Americans are the American Indians. I doubt you would ever be asked such a question in Beijing. <g>

My point being, the devaluation of the Yuan would almost be
a personal disappoinment to the Chinese. It would not be something they would do without much thought and effort to avoid it.

If I am wrong, please say so. I can only learn by listening to others.
