UAVs are definitely the wave of the future, but drone technology and tactics are hardly new. The ADM-20 Quail was first produced in 1960 to mimic the radar signature of the B-52 so B-52s could overwhelm enemy radar installations and blind them with multiple false targets.

For decades fighter pilots and other aircrews have trained against drones because the drones can be programmed to perform maneuvers that human pilots cannot perform, or are too dangerous to perform.

I suspect that the F-35 might be the last manned fighter the US military produces. Advances in composite materials technology and artificial intelligence portends that air warfare will be taking place at such speed that the frail human body and slow human brain will not be able to keep pace.
